The Balanced Rock Trail leads to one of Iowa's most photographed geological oddities - a massive limestone block perched precariously on a narrow pedestal, defying apparent gravity. The boulder was left in this position by differential weathering as softer limestone eroded away beneath a harder caprock layer. The surrounding ravine contains mature second-growth forest with wild ginger, bloodroot, and other spring ephemerals blooming in April.
