Snake River Overlook

The Snake River Overlook trail leads to Register Rock, one of the most remarkable pioneer artifacts surviving along the entire length of the Oregon Trail. The large sandstone boulder is covered with the carved names, dates, and inscriptions of emigrants who passed this way beginning in the 1840s, creating an open-air register of the westward migration that spans decades of American history. Hundreds of legible signatures and dates remain visible, the oldest among the earliest travelers on the trail.

The route from the trailhead crosses sagebrush desert terrain before reaching the river overlook section, where the Snake River comes into view cutting through its basalt canyon. The river here is popular with white pelicans, Canada geese, and various duck species that congregate in calmer stretches below small rapids. From the overlook the full scope of the Snake River Plain is visible, the same view that must have filled arriving emigrants with a mixture of relief and continued concern about the long miles still ahead. Register Rock itself sits in a shaded grove of old cottonwood trees beside the river, and a protective shelter preserves the inscriptions from further weathering while allowing close examination of this irreplaceable historical record.
