Bear Swamp Trail

Bear Swamp Trail loops through the wetland and pond complex at Medoc Mountain State Park, visiting active beaver ponds and providing outstanding opportunities for wetland bird observation. The trail winds through a mosaic of habitats including swamp forest dominated by swamp tupelo and red maple, open beaver pond margins, and upland transition zones. Beavers have been highly active in this area for decades, and their engineering has created a network of ponds and flooded forest that dramatically increases habitat diversity and wildlife density. Great blue herons, great egrets, and various duck species use the ponds year-round, while wood ducks and hooded mergansers nest in the surrounding forest. Osprey visit during migration and occasionally summer in the park. The wetland is also an excellent spot for amphibians, with chorus frogs and spring peepers creating a deafening chorus in March. Beaver dam crossings are incorporated into the trail route, providing close-up views of these remarkable structures. Black bears are occasionally sighted in the swamp area, giving the trail its name. No entrance fee is required. The trail can be muddy after rainfall, and rubber boots or waterproof footwear are recommended during wet seasons. Mosquito repellent is advisable in summer months.
