Stream Loop Trail

Stream Loop Trail follows Little Fishing Creek through a lush bottomland forest that represents one of the most diverse ecological zones in Medoc Mountain State Park. The creek corridor supports a rich riparian community including giant American beech, river birch, and sycamore trees, with a dense understory of ironwood, spicebush, and wild ginger. The stream itself is a high-quality blackwater creek, amber-colored from tannins and supporting native brook trout in its upper reaches along with a diverse aquatic invertebrate community. Spring wildflowers are exceptional along the creek banks, with trout lily, mayapple, and dwarf crested iris blooming in early April before the tree canopy closes. The gentle terrain and short length make this an ideal trail for families with young children, and the accessible footpath follows the creek closely enough that the sound of water accompanies most of the walk. Wood ducks nest in cavities along the creek and can be seen paddling in slower pools. The park maintains nest boxes along the creek to supplement natural cavity availability. No entrance fee is required. This trail is excellent year-round but particularly rewarding in spring and during fall migration when warblers concentrate in the creek-side vegetation.
