Alms House Trail

Alms House Trail winds through the historical and natural landscape of Monte Sano State Park, passing the atmospheric ruins of a 1920s sanitarium that operated on the mountain as a tuberculosis treatment facility. Monte Sano Mountain, rising 1,600 feet above the Huntsville valley, was believed to have therapeutic air quality in the early 20th century, and the Alms House served patients seeking a cure before effective tuberculosis treatments were developed. The crumbling stone walls and overgrown foundations of the sanitarium complex create an evocative ruin landscape now reclaimed by the surrounding forest. The trail also visits several overlooks with views down to Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley below, including glimpses of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center where Saturn V rockets were developed. The surrounding forest is a mature mixed hardwood community with excellent spring wildflower displays, particularly bloodroot, trillium, and wild ginger. Stone walls and terraces from former agricultural use and park development are visible throughout the route. Monte Sano State Park is a beloved natural area within the Huntsville city limits, making it one of Alabama's most accessible mountain parks. No entrance fee is charged. The park offers an extensive trail network, and the Alms House Trail connects to several other routes for longer combinations.
