Bluff Trail

Bluff Trail traverses the western escarpment of Monte Sano Mountain, following a series of sandstone and limestone bluffs that provide expansive overlooks across the Huntsville valley and the broader Tennessee Valley below. The bluff system extends for nearly a mile along the mountain's face, with multiple overlook points that together offer a nearly continuous panoramic view. From the highest overlooks, the city of Huntsville spreads across the valley floor with the Redstone Arsenal and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center visible to the south and the ridges of northern Alabama rolling away to the north. The trail hugs the bluff edge, with the cliff faces dropping steeply on the valley side and dense hardwood forest providing shade on the uphill side. Wildlife concentration near the bluffs is notable, with broad-winged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, and Cooper's hawks visible riding thermals during fall migration, and resident red-tailed hawks and great horned owls using the cliff faces for nesting. The bluff vegetation includes unusual rock outcrop communities with reindeer lichen, pale corydalis, and wild columbine in spring. No entrance fee is charged. The trail is accessible from the main park trailhead on Monte Sano Boulevard and connects to the park's extensive trail network for longer outings.
