The Mount Constitution Summit Trail climbs to the highest point in the San Juan Islands at 2,409 feet, offering what many consider the finest viewpoint in the Pacific Northwest. The trail winds through old-growth forests of Douglas fir, cedar, and bigleaf maple, ascending steadily through quiet woodland that feels remarkably remote despite the island setting. At the summit stands a magnificent 1936 stone observation tower constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, modeled after medieval watchtowers of the Caucasus Mountains. Climbing the tower adds additional height and transforms the already sweeping panorama into a truly staggering 360-degree view encompassing the Canadian Gulf Islands, the Cascades with Mount Baker and Mount Rainier both visible on clear days, the Olympic Mountains, Puget Sound, and dozens of San Juan Islands spread across the Salish Sea below. Ferries tracing white wakes across the blue water and bald eagles riding thermals above the forest canopy complete the spectacular scene. The trail itself passes through several ecological zones and offers excellent wildflower displays in early summer. Deer are commonly encountered along the route. The summit can also be reached by car, but hikers earn a deeper appreciation for this remarkable island landscape. Begin at the Cascade Lake trailhead for the most scenic approach.
