Rock City Loop

Rock City Loop explores one of the most fascinating geological features of Mount Diablo State Park, weaving through a labyrinthine collection of wind-sculpted sandstone formations that include the remarkable Wind Cave and the iconic Elephant Rock. The sandstone outcrops at Rock City were deposited in ancient marine environments tens of millions of years ago and subsequently uplifted and sculpted by wind and water erosion into the dramatic tafoni formations visible today. Wind Cave is a natural shelter created by the honeycomb weathering process known as tafoni, where salts and moisture gradually excavate the interior of the sandstone, leaving intricate lattice-like walls and ceiling structures. Children delight in exploring the cave passages and climbing the rounded rock faces under parental supervision. Elephant Rock earned its name from an obvious resemblance to the profile of a resting elephant, and the landmark is one of the most photographed features in the park. The loop traverses the Rock City area through open grassland and scattered oak trees, with views south toward the Diablo Range. Spring wildflowers including goldfields and blue dicks carpet the surrounding grasslands. Birders often find this area productive for grassland species including western meadowlarks and white-tailed kites hunting over the open terrain. The geological interest and moderate accessibility make Rock City Loop a perfect complement to longer summit hikes in the park.
