Walker Home Ruins Loop

The Walker Home Ruins Loop is one of the most historically intriguing hikes in Jefferson County Open Space, combining panoramic Front Range views with the atmospheric stone ruins of an ambitious early 20th-century estate. The centerpiece is the roofless shell of John Brisben Walker s planned summer White House, a grand stone mansion he began constructing in 1911 with the intention of donating it to the nation as a presidential retreat. A devastating lightning strike in 1918 burned the structure before it was ever completed, leaving the haunting walls standing on the ridge exactly as they fell. Walker was a remarkable figure, a Colorado entrepreneur who owned Cosmopolitan Magazine before selling it to William Randolph Hearst, and his vision for a national gift remains one of the more unusual stories in Colorado history. The loop trail winds through Ponderosa pine and mountain mahogany above the Morrison hogbacks, delivering views spanning from Pikes Peak in the south to Longs Peak in the north on clear days. The meadows surrounding the ruins are carpeted with wildflowers in early summer and bright with Gamble oak color in fall. A second set of ruins nearby marks the site of Walker s original home, also lost to fire. The trail is well-marked and suitable for fit beginners comfortable with modest elevation gain.
