East Trail – Mount Philo Sp
The East Trail on Mount Philo provides a gentler, more forested alternative approach to the summit than the main Mount Philo Trail, winding through the mountain's lower eastern slopes in mature northern hardwood forest before connecting to the summit area near the cliff overlooks. The approach through sugar maple and basswood forest passes above springs and seeps that maintain particularly moist soil conditions, supporting a diverse spring wildflower community characteristic of the calcium-rich Champlain Valley limestone soils. Hepatica, spring beauty, Dutchman's breeches, and wild leek carpet the forest floor in April and early May before the canopy leafs out and shades the understory. The trail gradient is significantly more moderate than the direct summit trail, making this the recommended route for families with younger children or for hikers preferring a steadier climb. The forested character provides excellent songbird habitat — the mature hardwood canopy hosts breeding red-eyed vireos, ovenbirds, wood thrushes, and multiple warbler species during the May-July breeding season. Connecting to the summit overlook provides the full Champlain Valley panorama regardless of which trail approach is used. The East Trail's lower sections pass through an area of particularly fine spring wildflower display, recognized informally as one of the best accessible wildflower walks in Chittenden County.
