Mount Philo Trail – Mount Philo Sp
Mount Philo State Park is the oldest state park in Vermont, established in 1924, and its 968-foot summit cliff delivers the finest accessible panorama of the Champlain Valley in the state — a sweeping vista encompassing Lake Champlain, the Adirondack Mountains of New York directly across the lake, and the agricultural patchwork of Vermont's most fertile lowland extending to the north and south. The trail gains nearly all of its elevation in less than a mile, ascending the mountain's eastern face on a combination of steep switchbacks and scrambling sections over exposed Chazy Limestone, a Ordovician-age sedimentary formation that weathers into distinctive sharp ridges and ledge faces. The limestone bedrock is critical ecologically — it creates a higher-pH, calcium-rich soil environment that supports a distinctive assemblage of wildflowers including bloodroot, large-flowered trillium, wild ginger, and blue cohosh in spring. The summit cliff edge overlooks the Champlain Valley flatlands and the historic town of Charlotte below, with the Charlotte Ferry crossing visible on Lake Champlain. Peregrine falcons nested on the cliff face historically and restoration efforts have occasionally returned them to this southern Champlain Valley site. The combination of geological interest, botanical richness, dramatic views, and Vermont historical significance makes this short but physically demanding trail one of the most rewarding in the Lake Champlain region.
