Vista House Trail

Vista House Trail leads to a charming 1930s stone shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps on the forested slopes of Mount Spokane, offering a rewarding moderate hike with historical interest and excellent panoramic views across eastern Washington. The CCC constructed Vista House as a rest stop and viewpoint for early automobile tourists who drove the scenic road to the mountain, and the rustic stone masonry building has been lovingly maintained as a testament to that era of public works craftsmanship. The trail climbs through subalpine forest of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, passing through patches of wildflower meadow where shooting stars, glacier lilies, and arnica bloom in succession through the summer months. As the trail gains elevation, views open progressively toward the Spokane Valley and the rolling Palouse hills to the south and southwest. The Vista House itself provides a sheltered spot to rest and enjoy the scenery, with stone benches and a fireplace inside the historic structure. Deer are frequently encountered along the trail, particularly in morning and evening hours. The moderate grade and manageable distance make this trail accessible to a wide range of hikers, from families with older children to senior visitors seeking a rewarding mountain experience without the full commitment of the summit route. The trailhead is easily accessible from the main park road.
