Steep Ravine Trail

Steep Ravine Trail descends into one of the most enchanting canyon environments on the entire Marin Peninsula, threading alongside Webb Creek through a cathedral-like corridor of old-growth coast redwoods draped in ferns and mosses. The trail's namesake steepness is immediately apparent, with the path dropping sharply through the ravine on wooden ladders, log bridges, and stone steps that add a sense of adventure to every descent. A highlight of the route is a dramatic 200-foot cascade that thunders through the canyon after winter rains, creating a misty, primeval atmosphere that feels worlds away from the urban Bay Area. The dense tree canopy keeps the ravine cool and shaded year-round, making this an excellent hot-weather option. Banana slugs, Pacific giant salamanders, and varied thrushes inhabit the lush understory. The out-and-back format means hikers must climb back up the steep gradient, which is demanding on knees and legs. Spring runoff makes the creek especially impressive, while summer dries to a series of tranquil pools. The trailhead is accessible from the Pantoll parking area.
