Rock Pond Trail

Rock Pond Trail provides an approachable entry point to Mueller State Park's renowned wildlife and scenery, winding 2.5 miles through a landscape of open elk meadows, granite outcrops, and a small mountain pond that attracts a surprisingly diverse array of wildlife to its shores. The modest elevation gain of 300 feet makes this loop accessible to families and casual hikers while still delivering the park's trademark combination of Pikes Peak views and abundant wildlife encounters.

The pond itself is the trail's centerpiece and a reliable wildlife magnet. Elk, deer, and coyotes visit the water's edge regularly, and the surrounding meadows host numerous songbirds and raptors. In early morning, the mirror-calm pond reflects Pikes Peak when atmospheric conditions cooperate, creating one of the park's most photogenic moments. The granite outcrops scattered throughout the loop are typical of the Pikes Peak Batholith — ancient intrusive rock that forms the core of Colorado's most famous fourteener and the hills that surround it. Mueller does not permit dogs on any trails, a policy that contributes directly to its exceptional wildlife viewing. The park entrance fee is $10 per vehicle.
