Wapiti Trail

Wapiti Trail — wapiti being the Shawnee word for elk — lives up to its name with exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities across a 5-mile loop through Mueller State Park's diverse montane terrain. The trail traverses dense ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest, open meadow clearings, and aspen groves that burst into gold each September, delivering a changing landscape that keeps the route engaging throughout its length.

Wildflower displays are a highlight from June through August, when the meadow sections fill with lupine, Indian paintbrush, and wild geranium. The 600-foot elevation gain unfolds gradually across the loop, with the high points offering partial views toward Pikes Peak through the pines. Elk sightings are common, particularly in the meadow sections at dawn and dusk, and mule deer, wild turkey, and a variety of raptors add to the wildlife tally. The ponderosa forest provides a textured, fragrant environment quite different from the alpine terrain of the nearby Pikes Peak summit. Mueller State Park prohibits dogs on all trails to protect its wildlife corridor. The $10 per vehicle entrance fee applies year-round.
