Myakka Prairie Trail – Myakka River
The Myakka Prairie Trail loops through the expansive wet prairie ecosystem that defines much of the park's 37,000-acre interior—one of the largest intact Florida wet prairies remaining. The route crosses open grassland dotted with saw palmetto islands, seasonal ponds, and scattered cabbage palm hammocks, with the Myakka River visible to the west during sections of the loop. The prairie floods shin-deep in summer, making dry-season hiking far more accessible.
This trail offers Florida's best overland birding for grassland species. Burrowing owls, Florida sandhill cranes, and the Florida grasshopper sparrow—one of North America's most endangered birds—inhabit the prairie core. Crested caracaras quarter low over the grass hunting prey, and swallow-tailed kites soar overhead during spring migration. White-tailed deer, feral hogs, and bobcats leave tracks in the sandy sections. The moderate rating reflects trail length and potential for disorientation in the featureless prairie rather than elevation change. The Myakka River crossing mid-loop can be knee-deep in dry season; a small footbridge assists passage at the main crossing point.
