The full 11-mile Kalalau Trail is widely regarded as the ultimate Kauai hiking experience and one of the most spectacular multi-day coastal treks in the world. Traversing the full length of the Na Pali Coast from Ke'e Beach to Kalalau Beach, the trail crosses five major valleys and climbs over four major ridges, each offering progressively more dramatic views of the fluted 4,000-foot sea cliffs. The final destination, Kalalau Beach, is an isolated 2-mile-long strand accessible only by the trail or by sea kayak during summer months. A camping permit is required for overnight stays, and the permit system is highly competitive with slots reserved months in advance. The route involves stream crossings, exposed cliff traverses, and significant cumulative elevation gain requiring navigation of rough and sometimes dangerously narrow trail sections. Kalalau Valley itself supports populations of wild goats and numerous native plant species. The experience of spending a night at Kalalau Beach beneath towering Na Pali cliffs, far from any road, is considered by many to be among the most profound in the Hawaiian Islands.
