Hood's Branch Trail

Hood's Branch Trail explores a richer and less-visited portion of Natural Bridge State Resort Park's sandstone arch landscape, connecting two geological features—Henson's Cave arch and Balanced Rock—that showcase the variety of erosional forms the Corbin Sandstone creates as it weathers in the humid Red River Gorge microclimate. The trail descends initially into the Hood's Branch drainage, a narrow hollow where the stream has cut through the sandstone plateau creating a miniature gorge lined with eastern hemlock and rhododendron. Henson's Cave arch is encountered mid-trail, a smaller but structurally elegant natural bridge formed where a rock-house alcove's back wall eroded through, creating a window arch whose keystone geometry perfectly mirrors the tension forces that keep the span intact. Balanced Rock sits in dramatic isolation on a clifftop, a boulder of dense quartzite larger than a pickup truck perched on a narrow sandstone pedestal—a glacial erratic or erosional remnant that appears too precarious to have survived for any length of time yet has been in place for thousands of years. The trail passes through several additional rock-house alcoves, the characteristic overhanging shelter caves of the Red River Gorge region, where the perpetually shaded and dripping interior walls support communities of specialized ferns and mosses that grow nowhere else on the surrounding dry ridges. Wild turkey are frequently observed scratching in the leaf litter of the open hardwood sections.
