Purchase Ridge Trail

The Purchase Ridge Trail climbs steadily from the Stock Creek valley floor to the broad ridgeline plateau that defines the landscape of Scott County's portion of the Southwest Virginia Plateau, rewarding the ascent with expansive views that showcase the region's distinctive ridge-and-valley topography. The trail gains elevation through a mixed oak-hickory forest dominated by chestnut oak on the drier ridge slopes and tulip poplar in the moister hollows, passing rocky outcrops of Clinch sandstone that form prominent ledges along the upper ridge. The ridgeline itself offers periodic clearings through the canopy where views extend westward across the Powell Valley toward Powell Mountain and east toward Clinch Mountain, demonstrating why settlers named this the Purchase Ridge—it commanded a strategic visual survey of the surrounding agricultural valleys. Evidence of historical land use is visible in old fence lines and stone walls encountered mid-trail, remnants of the small-scale livestock farming that once dominated these Southwest Virginia ridges. The plateau character of the upper ridge creates a surprisingly flat walking surface once the climb is complete, allowing for relaxed stride while scanning the forest for pileated woodpeckers, which are particularly common here. Wild ginger and may-apple carpet the forest floor in dense patches beneath the hardwood canopy on the north-facing slopes.
