Gold Hunter's Cave Trail

Gold Hunter's Cave Trail leads to one of the most memorable features at Nelson Kennedy Ledges — a narrow canyon passage culminating in a cold-air cave that maintains a noticeably lower temperature than the surrounding forest even on hot summer days. The cave draws its name from 19th-century legends of gold hidden in the ledges by outlaws or Indigenous peoples, though no treasure has ever been documented. The trail threads through the same Sharon Conglomerate rock formations that define the park, requiring hikers to navigate tight squeezes and scramble over rounded boulders worn smooth by centuries of freeze-thaw cycles. The canyon approach to the cave involves a sideways shuffle through a gap barely 18 inches wide at its narrowest point. Inside, the cold air cave exhales a constant breath of chilled air from deep within the fractured rock mass, the result of cold winter air trapped and slowly released throughout summer. Ferns and mosses thrive in the perpetual shade and moisture. The return loop climbs above the ledge line, offering views down into the canyon passages from above. This trail combines well with the main Ledges Trail for a thorough exploration of the park's geological wonders.
