Ledges Trail

The Ledges Trail at Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park winds through one of the most unusual geological landscapes in northeast Ohio — a labyrinth of Sharon Conglomerate rock formations that rise up to 30 feet above the forest floor. Sharon Conglomerate is a distinctive sedimentary rock embedded with white quartz pebbles, formed from ancient beach and river deposits roughly 320 million years ago and later sculpted by glacial meltwater. The loop passes through narrow slot canyons barely wide enough for an adult to squeeze through sideways, beneath massive overhanging boulders, and along rock ledges that offer glimpses into the forest canopy below. Mosses, ferns, and polypody cling to every damp surface, giving the park a primordial atmosphere. The trail is well-marked with painted blazes on the rock and requires some scrambling over boulders and through tight passages. Visitors with claustrophobia or mobility limitations should be aware that several sections require significant flexibility. The park is particularly beautiful in late October when the surrounding maple and beech forest peaks in fall color. Dogs must be leashed at all times. The park sees heavy weekend use; arrive early on summer weekends to secure parking.
