Pebble Alley Trail

Pebble Alley Trail takes its name from its most distinctive feature: a narrow canyon passage whose floor is literally paved with rounded stream stones, smoothed and deposited by glacial meltwater that once roared through these Sharon Conglomerate formations. The alley itself is a slot-like corridor where the canyon walls close to just a few feet apart, rising overhead in layered bands of conglomerate studded with white quartz pebbles the size of marbles and walnuts. Walking through Pebble Alley feels like navigating a giant geological exhibit, with the rock record of an ancient shoreline literally underfoot and overhead. The short loop is the most accessible of the Nelson Kennedy Ledges routes and makes an excellent introduction to the park's unique geology for families with young children. Despite the easy rating, some boulder hopping is required, and the uneven stone floor demands sturdy footwear. The surrounding forest of hemlock, beech, and maple provides deep shade throughout the canyon. In spring, ephemeral wildflowers bloom on the canyon rims above. The trail connects easily to the longer Ledges Trail and Gold Hunter's Cave Trail for those wishing to extend their exploration.
