The Woodland Trail at Newton Hills State Park offers an intimate loop through the park's mature bur oak forest, providing one of the finest woodland hiking experiences in southeastern South Dakota. The trail winds through a high-canopy oak forest where centuries-old trees with deeply furrowed bark create a cathedral atmosphere along the path. The forest floor beneath the oaks is carpeted with a diversity of native wildflowers, ferns, and shrubs that vary by season: bloodroot and hepatica in early April, wild columbine and Jack-in-the-pulpit in May, and bergamot and black-eyed Susan in the sunnier forest openings in midsummer.

Wild turkeys are the signature wildlife of this trail, and large flocks of twenty or more birds are a near-daily sight along the Woodland Trail, particularly in the early morning hours when they forage for acorns beneath the oak canopy. The park maintains one of the highest wild turkey densities in the state, and their distinctive gobbling in April and May echoes through the forest. White-tailed deer are equally abundant, and ruffed grouse are occasionally flushed from dense shrub tangles along the trail edge. The loop terrain includes several short steep sections on the ravine walls, but the overall difficulty remains accessible for most fitness levels. The trail is especially pleasant in spring and fall when mild temperatures combine with the forest's most dramatic visual displays.
