Cave of the Winds Trail – Niagara Falls Sp
The Cave of the Winds Trail delivers the most immersive waterfall experience at Niagara Falls, descending via elevator 175 feet into the Niagara Gorge and placing visitors on wooden boardwalks just feet from the cascading waters of Bridal Veil Falls. The journey culminates at the Hurricane Deck, a platform positioned only 20 feet from the base of the falls where the wind, noise, and spray create a genuinely overwhelming sensory experience. Participants are issued sandals and a yellow poncho because no ordinary rain gear can withstand the volume of water encountered on the deck. The boardwalk system is rebuilt each spring after winter ice destroys it, meaning every season brings a slightly new configuration. The experience is named for a cavern that once existed behind the falls before it collapsed in 1954. Despite the short trail distance, the sheer drama of standing beside millions of gallons of falling water makes this among the most memorable outdoor experiences in the northeastern United States. The route offers multiple viewing platforms at varying distances from the falls, allowing visitors to choose their preferred level of drenching. Evening visits during the illumination season provide a spectacular view of the falls lit in rotating colors.
