The Three Sisters Islands Trail winds through a chain of small islands in the upper Niagara River just above the American Falls, offering some of the most intimate and dramatic views of the Niagara gorge found anywhere in the oldest state park in the United States. Established in 1885, Niagara Falls State Park predates the national park system by decades, and these islands retain a wild character despite their proximity to the falls. The trail crosses a series of footbridges connecting Asenath, Angeline, and Celinda Eliza islands, named after the daughters of General Parkhurst Whitney. Standing at the upstream tip of Celinda Eliza Island, visitors feel the full force of the Niagara River as millions of gallons of water rush past on their way to the brink of Horseshoe Falls just downstream. The roar is constant and the mist can be felt even on calm days. Interpretive signs along the route explain the geology of the Niagara Escarpment and the fascinating erosion history of the falls. The loop is largely flat and accessible, making it suitable for families and visitors of all fitness levels. Sunrise visits reward early risers with soft light on the churning green water and far fewer crowds than the midday rush.
