Cliff Pond Loop

The Cliff Pond Loop circles the largest kettle pond in Nickerson State Park, which is itself the largest state park on Cape Cod at over 1,900 acres. Cliff Pond was formed roughly 12,000 years ago when a massive block of glacial ice buried by outwash sand slowly melted, leaving behind a deep, bowl-shaped depression that filled with groundwater. The result is a remarkably clear, spring-fed pond with sandy beaches and swimming areas that draw thousands of visitors each summer. The loop trail follows the pond's irregular shoreline through a classic Cape Cod landscape of pitch pine and scrub oak, the stunted forest that has adapted to the Cape's sandy, nutrient-poor soils and periodic fire regime. White-tailed deer are frequently visible at dawn and dusk along the trail edges, and painted turtles sun themselves on logs along the quieter northern shore. The trail surface alternates between firm sandy path and loose beach sand, requiring modest effort despite the minimal elevation change. Several beach access points around the loop invite spontaneous swimming stops during warm months. Nickerson's extensive trail network interconnects multiple kettle ponds including Flax Pond, Little Cliff Pond, and Higgins Pond, allowing hikers to extend their route through varied pond and pine barrens habitat throughout the park.
