Blue Lake Trail

Blue Lake Trail circles one of the mountain lakes within Oak Mountain State Park, providing a peaceful ramble through upland forest with lake views and excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and wildflower appreciation. The lake sits in a valley between two sandstone ridges, and the surrounding forest grades from upland ridge species on the hillsides above to bottomland hardwoods near the lake margin. Spring wildflowers are exceptional along the lake shore in April and May, with large displays of native azalea, wild geranium, and several trillium species brightening the forest understory. Wood ducks nest in boxes erected along the lake margins and can be seen paddling in the shallows throughout the warmer months. Great blue herons and belted kingfishers are year-round residents, while osprey visit during migration. The trail's easy grade and consistent loop format make it suitable for families with young children and visitors seeking a gentle introduction to the park's forest character. In autumn the surrounding hillsides display excellent fall color, with the lake surface reflecting the reds and oranges of the surrounding trees. The $5 vehicle fee applies. The Blue Lake trailhead is accessible from the main park road near the lake day-use area, which also includes picnic facilities and a fishing pier.
