North Trailhead Loop

North Trailhead Loop is the longest trail entirely within an Alabama state park, a 10-mile circuit that traverses the full length and character of Oak Mountain State Park's ridge-and-valley terrain. Oak Mountain itself is a doubly-plunging anticline, a geological structure where resistant sandstone and quartzite form parallel ridge crests on either side of a valley, creating the distinctive double-ridge topography that defines the park. The loop climbs both ridges, traverses the valley between them, and provides a comprehensive experience of all the park's habitat types. The ridge crests offer views north toward Birmingham and south toward Shelby County, with the city's skyline visible on clear days from the highest points. The valley section passes through diverse forest types including dry ridge communities with chestnut oak and Virginia pine, moist valley forest with tulip poplar and white oak, and stream bottomlands with sycamore and river birch. The Alabama Wildlife Center operates within the park, rehabilitating native raptors and other birds of prey, some of which are visible from the trails. The $5 vehicle fee applies. Oak Mountain is the largest state park in Alabama at over 9,000 acres, providing significant green space for the Birmingham metropolitan area. Trail conditions are best in spring and fall.
