San Marcos River Trail – Palmetto Sp
The San Marcos River Trail follows the spring-fed San Marcos River through the riparian corridor of Palmetto State Park, one of the most consistently clear and cool waterways in the Texas Hill Country region. The river emerges from the Edwards Aquifer system at constant temperature year-round, making it a natural swimming destination from late spring through early fall and a critical water source for wildlife throughout the year.
American alligators are a defining and somewhat surprising feature of this spring-fed river environment, present in healthy numbers and regularly observed basking on the sandy banks or drifting silently in the clear current. Their presence adds a genuine wild edge to what might otherwise feel like a gentle pastoral walk. River cooters and red-eared sliders bask on every available log and rock. Guadalupe bass, native to Texas spring-fed rivers, are visible in the crystal-clear water. Belted kingfishers patrol the river corridor with rattling calls while green herons stalk the shallower margins with infinite patience. The combination of crystal-clear water, surrounding subtropical vegetation, and unexpected alligator sightings creates a walking experience that defies easy categorization. The loop provides both riverside sections and interior bottomland passages for variety. Swimming is popular at designated areas where the water temperature provides relief from Texas summer heat.
