Capitol Peak Trail

The Capitol Peak Trail loops through some of the most geologically dramatic terrain in Palo Duro Canyon State Park, traversing beneath towering banded cliff faces where 90-million-year-old sedimentary layers are exposed in vivid horizontal stripes of red, white, and yellow across the canyon walls. The route takes its name from a prominent mesa formation whose flat top and vertical walls suggest the profile of a state capitol building, rising majestically above the canyon floor with characteristic Texas pride. The trail winds through a landscape of eroded badlands, crossing dry creek beds and passing clusters of wind-sculpted hoodoos and pedestaled rocks that demonstrate the ongoing work of wind and water in shaping this ancient terrain. Canyon wrens, whose descending song echoes melodically off the rock walls, are among the most characteristic sounds of the trail. Mule deer browse in the junipers during morning and evening hours, and the occasional Texas horned lizard can be spotted sunning on flat rocks. The exposed terrain offers minimal shade, making early morning starts essential during warmer months. The multi-colored canyon walls provide endlessly changing compositions for photographers throughout the day, with the warm tones of the sedimentary rock glowing most intensely in afternoon light.
