Doane Valley Nature Trail

The Doane Valley Nature Trail is a gentle and enchanting loop through one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich valleys in San Diego County, located within Palomar Mountain State Park in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The trail winds through a magnificent old-growth forest of cedar, white fir, and black oak that is unique in this region, creating a lush, shaded environment that feels more reminiscent of the Sierra Nevada than the typically arid landscapes of Southern California.

The highlight of the loop is Doane Pond, a tranquil fishing pond stocked with rainbow trout that sits at the heart of the valley surrounded by towering conifers. The pond is a peaceful gathering spot where hikers can rest on the banks and observe waterfowl, California newts, and various songbirds that inhabit the moist valley habitat. The surrounding forest creates a canopy that filters the light into a dappled, cathedral-like atmosphere that is especially beautiful in early morning.

Doane Valley receives significantly more precipitation than the surrounding lowlands due to its elevation of approximately 5,000 feet and its exposure to moisture-bearing storms from the Pacific. This higher moisture availability supports the remarkable old-growth forest that gives the valley its distinctive character. The 1-mile loop gains only 100 feet of elevation and is suitable for all ages and abilities. The $10 per vehicle park entry fee applies. Leashed dogs are welcome on this trail. The valley can be cool and misty even in summer, so layers are recommended.
