Rim Trail

Rim Trail at Patrick Point State Park follows the dramatic headland rim above the Pacific Ocean, offering spectacular views of sea stacks rising from the surf, the Agate Beach tide pools below, and the distinctive profile of Trinidad Head to the south along the rugged Humboldt Coast. The trail winds through a dense canopy of Sitka spruce and red alder that frames numerous rocky overlooks above the churning Pacific, where the full force of North Pacific swells crashes against the ancient coastal rocks in plumes of white spray. Sea stacks colonized by nesting seabirds including common murres, pigeon guillemots, and Brandt cormorants rise from the water immediately below several viewpoints, providing exceptional wildlife observation opportunities without requiring long distances or difficult terrain. Trinidad Head, visible to the south, served as a landmark for coastal navigators for centuries and now anchors one of the finest stretches of undeveloped North Coast beach accessible to the public. Agate Beach below the headland takes its name from the agate stones that wave action polishes and deposits on the cobblestone shore, rewarding beachcombers who know what to look for. The dense Sitka spruce forest along the rim filters the frequent coastal fog into an atmospheric green-grey world that feels primeval and remote despite the relative accessibility of the park. Harbor seals and Steller sea lions patrol the nearshore waters, and gray whales are regularly spotted during migration months.
