Bolen Bluff Trail

Bolen Bluff Trail offers a quieter, more intimate alternative to the famous La Chua Trail, descending from a forested upland ridge to a panoramic overlook above Paynes Prairie basin. The trail begins in a shaded live oak and hickory hammock before transitioning into scrubby flatwoods and ultimately arriving at a wooden observation platform perched above the prairie edge. The elevated vantage point provides excellent long-distance views over the open grassland where wildlife congregates.

Sandhill cranes, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey are commonly observed from the overlook, and bison are occasionally visible in the distance during favorable conditions. The hammock section of the trail shelters a rich understory of beautyberry, wild azalea, and native ferns, with pileated woodpeckers and barred owls inhabiting the canopy. The loop format returns hikers through varied habitat, including a section through pine flatwoods with an open understory that allows for excellent birding. The trail is well-signed and moderately trafficked, offering a peaceful immersion in north Florida upland ecology.
