The Wolf Mountain Trail traverses the backcountry of Pedernales Falls State Park, climbing to exposed limestone ridges with sweeping views across the Hill Country and the Pedernales River valley before descending through scenic creek drainages on a challenging loop that showcases the full ecological diversity of this exceptional park. The ridge sections are exhilarating, with broad panoramas extending across rolling cedar-oak woodland to the river corridor below and distant limestone escarpments marking the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau. Golden-cheeked warblers nest in the Ashe juniper stands along the route in spring, and black-capped vireos inhabit the low scrub oak thickets on rocky slopes. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and coyotes are frequently encountered throughout the trail. The descent from Wolf Mountain into Tobacco Creek drainage passes through a shaded riparian corridor with giant bald cypress trees, their distinctive knees emerging from the stream banks in characteristic fashion. The strenuous elevation gain and length make this trail suitable for experienced hikers in good physical condition. Water is scarce along the route and should be carried in abundance, especially during the warmer months when temperatures on the exposed ridge can become extreme. The trail rewards effort with a comprehensive experience of Hill Country landscapes rarely accessed by casual park visitors.
