Minnehaha Trail

The Minnehaha Trail explores the interior uplands of Peninsula State Park, climbing onto the forested ridge that forms the park's spine and descending to the margin of Weborg Marsh, one of Door County's most productive birding wetlands. From the Weborg Point parking area the trail climbs through a dry oak-hickory woodland on the escarpment slope before reaching the ridge top, where the forest transitions to a richer sugar maple and basswood association with a lush understory of trillium, hepatica, and wild ginger. The ridge provides partial views east toward Green Bay through the canopy, and a single cleared overlook point reveals the sweep of the bay toward the village of Fish Creek far below. The descent to Weborg Marsh follows a small stream drainage through an increasingly wet forest of silver maple and green ash before emerging at the marsh edge, where cattail and sedge meadow extend to the open water. The marsh hosts breeding yellow-headed blackbirds, common gallinules, and Virginia rails, and migrating waterfowl use it heavily in April and October. A short boardwalk over the marsh edge provides a stable viewing platform without damaging the substrate. The loop returns to the trailhead through the campground area via a mowed path through an old orchard where white-tailed deer graze in the evening.
