Beaver Swamp Trail

The Beaver Swamp Trail in Peoples State Forest explores one of the most productive beaver habitats in Connecticut alongside old-growth forest remnants that represent some of the state's oldest living trees. Peoples State Forest, established in 1921 along the west bank of the Farmington River in Barkhamsted, is one of Connecticut's landmark conservation properties, and the Beaver Swamp area exemplifies the management philosophy of allowing natural processes to operate with minimal human interference. The central wetland complex has been shaped by beaver activity over decades, with a succession of dams creating a staircase of ponds and flooded forest that provides habitat for wood ducks, hooded mergansers, river otters, and a remarkable diversity of amphibians including spotted and Jefferson salamanders that breed in the deeper impoundments each spring. The old-growth forest sections contain eastern hemlock and white pine specimens exceeding 200 years in age, their massive trunks and deeply furrowed bark immediately distinguishable from the surrounding second-growth forest. Interpretive signs along the trail identify old-growth characteristics and explain the ecological importance of large, old trees to forest biodiversity. The loop surface is generally firm with modest wet sections near the beaver impoundments, navigable with regular hiking footwear in most seasons. This trail is especially rewarding in spring and early summer when beaver activity peaks and wood duck ducklings emerge from their nest boxes.
