Seven Hollows Trail

The Seven Hollows Trail is among the most geologically fascinating hikes in Arkansas, threading through a landscape of seven distinct canyon hollows eroded into the sandstone cap of Petit Jean Mountain. Each hollow has its own microclimate and character, ranging from narrow slot-canyon passages to wide, fern-filled amphitheaters where springs seep from the rock walls. The diversity of environments encountered over four miles is extraordinary and keeps hikers engaged throughout the loop.

One of the most celebrated features along the route is Turtle Rocks, a cluster of large rounded sandstone boulders weathered into forms resembling giant tortoises. The sculptural quality of these formations has made them among the most photographed landmarks in Petit Jean State Park. The trail also passes through groves of ancient shortleaf pine and mixed hardwood forest draped in mountain laurel. Stream crossings add challenge and interest, particularly after rainfall. The well-marked loop departs and returns to the same trailhead, and a park map is strongly recommended given the complexity of the terrain. This is a trail that rewards those who linger.
