Pfeiffer Falls Trail

Pfeiffer Falls Trail leads through one of the most enchanting redwood canyons on the California coast, following Pfeiffer Creek through a cathedral grove of ancient coast redwoods to a slender 60-foot waterfall that tumbles over mossy rocks into a fern-draped grotto. The trail begins near the park visitor center and immediately enters the cool, dim world of the redwood forest, where the towering trees create a canopy that filters sunlight into shifting shafts of green-gold illumination. The forest floor is carpeted with redwood sorrel, five-finger ferns, and trillium that thrive in the perpetual moisture and shade. Wooden bridges cross and re-cross the creek as the trail climbs gently up the canyon, and the sound of flowing water accompanies hikers throughout the journey. The waterfall at the trail end flows most impressively in winter and spring following seasonal rains, though a residual flow persists through summer. The rocky amphitheater below the falls is draped in maiden-hair ferns and mosses that remain brilliantly green year-round in the perpetual mist. The canyon walls supporting these ancient trees rise dramatically on both sides, reinforcing the sense of sheltered intimacy that makes this redwood grove so memorable. Return via the same route, taking time to notice the play of light through the canopy at different points on the trail.
