Valley View Trail

Valley View Trail offers one of the most rewarding short hikes in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, climbing steeply from the redwood-shaded canyon floor to a spectacular overlook above the Big Sur River canyon and the surrounding Santa Lucia Mountains. Despite its modest distance, the trail packs considerable elevation gain into its short length, ascending through a mix of redwood forest and coastal scrub to reach the open viewpoint perched above the treetops. The panoramic overlook reveals the dramatic topography of Big Sur with remarkable clarity, showing the deep river canyon below, the ridgeline of the Santa Lucia Range above, and glimpses of the Pacific Ocean visible through the coastal mountains on clear days. Coast redwoods in the canyon below look deceptively small from the elevated vantage point, providing a compelling sense of scale for these ancient giants. The transition from dense redwood shade to sunny exposed chaparral along the climb produces a pleasant variety of microclimates and associated plant communities. California thrasher, wrentit, and Anna hummingbird are commonly encountered in the chaparral sections, while the redwood forest below shelters Steller jays and varied thrushes. The relatively short length of this trail makes it accessible to most visitors and an excellent complement to the longer Pfeiffer Falls Trail that begins nearby. The view from the overlook is particularly striking in the late afternoon when coastal fog begins to pour through the mountain gaps.
