Hunter Trail

The Hunter Trail at Picacho Peak State Park is one of Arizona's most thrilling and challenging hikes, ascending the dramatic volcanic plug that served as a landmark along the historic Butterfield Overland Mail route and as the site of the westernmost land battle of the Civil War in April 1862. The trail attacks the steep flanks of Picacho Peak using a series of steel cables and ladders bolted into the volcanic rock, making exposure management and upper body strength important factors for hikers undertaking this demanding route. The volcanic rock is extremely rough and provides excellent traction on dry days, though the route becomes treacherous when wet. From the summit, the views extend across the Sonoran Desert to the Santa Catalina, Superstition, and Estrella Mountains in every direction, with Interstate 10 visible far below as it follows the ancient trade route through the desert. The peak rises abruptly from the flat desert floor, making its summit views disproportionately impressive for its modest absolute elevation. Spring wildflower displays at Picacho Peak are legendary in Arizona, with Mexican gold poppies and owl clover carpeting the slopes in brilliant orange and purple during good wildflower years following winter rainfall. The loop returns via the Sunset Vista Trail route, providing different perspectives on the mountain's dramatic geology. This hike is not recommended for those with a fear of heights or during hot summer months.
