Hidden Passage Trail

Hidden Passage Trail is the longest and most adventurous route in Pickett State Park, a full-day loop that traverses the park's most dramatic geological features including a true cave passage, multiple natural arches, and an extensive sandstone ridge system. The namesake hidden passage is a narrow cave tunnel through solid rock that hikers must squeeze through with packs, an unforgettable experience that few other state park trails can match. The loop encompasses a microcosm of the Cumberland Plateau's geological diversity, passing from creek-bottom forest through rock shelter overhangs onto exposed sandstone ridges and back down through boulder fields. Multiple overnight backcountry campsites along the route make this trail ideal for an overnight backpacking trip, allowing exploration at a relaxed pace. The trail is occasionally primitive and requires careful attention to blazes and trail markers. Several stream crossings without bridges add challenge during high water. The remote and rugged character of this trail means encounters with other hikers are infrequent even on weekends. No entrance fee is charged. The trail shares sections with the Big South Fork NRRA trail network, potentially allowing extension into the adjacent national park area.
