Natural Bridge Trail

Natural Bridge Trail provides direct access to one of the finest natural sandstone arches in the Tennessee state park system, a massive span of Pennsylvanian sandstone that has been carved by erosion over countless centuries. The arch is large enough to walk beneath comfortably, and interpretive panels near the structure explain how differential erosion of the layered sandstone created the span by undercutting softer rock layers while more resistant strata remained intact above. The area immediately around the arch is a botanical hotspot, with moisture-loving ferns and mosses carpeting the shaded overhang area while drier rock outcrops nearby support entirely different drought-adapted species. The short loop makes this trail accessible to visitors of all ages and fitness levels, including those using walking aids. The natural arch can be crowded on summer weekends due to its proximity to the park campground and cabin area, but weekday visits offer a much more solitary experience. No entrance fee is charged to access Pickett State Park. The park's remote location in northern Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau, adjacent to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, ensures a genuinely wild setting even for this easy trail. Combine with the Rock Creek Trail for a more substantial visit.
