Jomeokee Trail

Jomeokee Trail encircles the base of Pilot Mountain's iconic quartzite knob, the distinctive rounded summit that has served as a landmark for Native Americans and European settlers for centuries. The name Jomeokee comes from the Saura people's word for the mountain, meaning great guide or pilot, acknowledging its long history as a navigation landmark visible for miles across the piedmont. The trail loops around the monadnock at close range, offering constantly changing perspectives on the sheer quartzite walls that rise above. Climbing on the knob itself is prohibited to protect rare plant communities that cling to the rock face, making this circumnavigation trail the closest legal approach. Peregrine falcons nest on the north face cliffs and active nest sites are closed during breeding season from January through July. The dense vegetation around the knob's base includes mountain laurel, Virginia pine, and chestnut oak. Summit views from the knob's base, while not as expansive as from higher vantage points, are still rewarding and include a bird's-eye look up at the impressive quartzite walls. The $7 vehicle fee is collected at the main park entrance. This trail is accessible to almost all fitness levels.
