Mountain Trail Loop

Mountain Trail Loop circles the upper mountain unit of Pilot Mountain State Park, visiting multiple overlooks that showcase sweeping views across the North Carolina piedmont in multiple directions. The trail traverses the slopes below the quartzite knob, weaving through a mature forest dominated by chestnut oak, Virginia pine, and mountain laurel. Several designated overlook platforms and natural rock outcrops provide resting spots and photography opportunities. The southern overlooks reveal a vast piedmont landscape extending toward Winston-Salem and the Triad metro area, while northern viewpoints look toward the Virginia border. The trail gains and loses elevation repeatedly as it contours around the mountain, making the overall experience more varied than a simple summit-and-return route. In October the surrounding forest turns gold and orange, making this one of the premier fall foliage hikes in the piedmont region. The Jomeokee Trail can be combined with this loop for a longer outing that includes the knob circumnavigation. The $7 vehicle fee applies to all park visitors. This trail is well-maintained with regular clearing and erosion control measures. Parking in the upper mountain lot fills by mid-morning on fall weekends, so arrive by 8 a.m. for guaranteed access.
