Appalachian Trail - Halfway Point

Pine Grove Furnace State Park sits precisely at the midpoint of the 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail, making this section a pilgrimage destination for thru-hikers and AT enthusiasts alike. The iconic half-gallon challenge tradition — where northbound thru-hikers celebrate reaching the halfway point by eating a full half-gallon of ice cream purchased at the Ironmaster's Mansion store — draws crowds each summer and has become one of the trail's most beloved rites of passage. This out-and-back route begins at the General Store near the halfway monument and climbs through South Mountain hardwood forest on the AT's white-blaze corridor. The trail passes through second-growth oak and hickory that replaced the original forest cleared during the furnace era to produce charcoal for the ironworks visible near the trailhead. The Ironmaster's Mansion, built in 1829 by ironmaster James Mickley, now serves as an Appalachian Trail hostel, providing affordable lodging to thru-hikers for decades. Historical markers and interpretive signs along the lower section explain the park's iron-making heritage. The climb offers views south over the Cumberland Valley as the trail ascends the ridge. The forest floor harbors a variety of spring wildflowers, and the ridgeline is productive for hawk migration observation in September and October when thousands of broad-winged, sharp-shinned, and Cooper's hawks funnel southward over the mountain.
