Kingfisher Trail

The Kingfisher Trail at Pinnacle Mountain State Park provides a completely different experience from the summit climbs, exploring the rich bottomland floodplain of the Arkansas River at the base of the mountain. This gentle loop winds through a mosaic of wet meadows, willow thickets, and mature cottonwood-sycamore forest characteristic of the Arkansas River floodplain ecosystem. The flat terrain and soft trail surface make this an excellent option for families, beginning hikers, or those seeking a leisurely nature walk after a more strenuous summit attempt.

Great blue herons are a constant presence along the trail, standing sentinel in the shallow backwater areas that border portions of the route. Belted kingfishers, which give the trail its name, rattle and plunge along the creek channels with athletic precision. Beavers are active throughout the floodplain, and their engineering work is visible in gnawed tree stumps and impounded water features along the trail. River otters have been documented in the area in recent years. The bottomland forest transforms dramatically with the seasons, from spring wildflower carpets to summer green tunnels to the golden and russet tones of cottonwood and sycamore in autumn.
