Meadow Marsh Loop

The Meadow Marsh Loop explores the interior wetland and forest habitats of the Ponderosa State Park peninsula, offering an excellent birding experience distinct from the lakeside routes. The trail descends from upland pine forest into a lush marsh and meadow complex fed by seasonal springs and snowmelt, where cattails, sedges, and willows create dense cover attractive to a remarkable variety of bird species.

Common yellowthroats, song sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, and Virginia rails inhabit the marsh fringe, while osprey and bald eagles patrol overhead. The meadow transitions provide habitat for deer, black bear, and occasionally moose along the wetland edges. After navigating the marsh section the trail climbs back through mature ponderosa pine forest with filtered views toward Payette Lake through the trees. Access points at various junctions allow hikers to connect directly to the lakeshore for a swim break before returning through the forest. Wildflowers in the meadow sections bloom from May through August in successive waves, with shooting stars and camas appearing first, followed by penstemons and the tall white spires of false solomon seal later in the season.
