North Beach Loops

The North Beach Loops wind through a spectacular grove of old-growth ponderosa pine on a narrow peninsula jutting into Payette Lake, one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in central Idaho. The trail system near the North Beach day-use area offers interconnected loops that reveal the park namesake trees at their most magnificent, with massive orange-barked trunks rising thirty meters or more above a carpet of pine needles and wildflowers.

Frequent lake viewpoints open through the trees to reveal the brilliant blue of Payette Lake with the jagged peaks of the West Mountains and Salmon River Mountains rising behind it. The North Beach itself is sandy and shallow, popular for swimming in summer, and the trail connections allow hikers to combine beach visits with forest walks. Interpretive signs throughout the grove explain old-growth forest ecology, the vanilla-butterscotch scent of warm ponderosa bark, and the role of low-intensity fire in maintaining healthy pine ecosystems. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and Clark nutcrackers are common in the canopy. The loops can be extended or shortened via connector paths, making this system adaptable for a wide range of fitness levels and available time.
