Homestead Trail

The Homestead Trail is Red Top Mountain's premier loop, traversing the wooded peninsula formed by Lake Allatoona's deeply indented coves to a series of lakefront overlooks with expansive views of one of Georgia's most popular recreational lakes. Red Top Mountain occupies a 1,950-acre peninsula on the western shore of Lake Allatoona—a 12,000-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir impounded on the Etowah River in 1950. The 'red top' name refers to the iron-rich red clay soil that characterized the pre-impoundment ridgelines.

The trail winds through mixed hardwood forest dominated by white oak, hickory, and Virginia pine recovering from pre-park agricultural use, with several interpretive stops at remnant homestead sites—stone foundation walls, old orchard species, and well depressions mark former farm locations now reclaimed by forest. The lakefront sections provide views across Allatoona's clear blue water to wooded ridges on the opposite shore, and great blue herons and ospreys fish the lake margins throughout the year. Beaver activity is evident at the small tributary coves along the route. The moderate rating reflects several short but steep ridge climbs between lake coves. Eagle sightings are increasingly common on Lake Allatoona as the resident population has grown steadily since reintroduction.
