Rhododendron Loop

Rhododendron State Park protects the largest wild rhododendron grove north of the Allegheny Mountains, a 16-acre stand of Rhododendron maximum that bursts into spectacular bloom each July in an explosion of pink-white flowers visible and fragrant from a considerable distance. The loop trail threads directly through the grove, passing beneath rhododendron shrubs that have grown into small trees over decades, their gnarled trunks and leathery evergreen leaves creating a dense, cathedral-like canopy 15 to 20 feet overhead. In full bloom, typically peaking in mid-July, the grove is one of the most extraordinary floral displays in New England, drawing visitors from across the region and earning a designation as a National Natural Landmark. Rhododendron maximum is at the northern edge of its range here in southwestern New Hampshire's Monadnock region, surviving due to the site's sheltered microclimate, acidic soil, and reliable soil moisture from a nearby brook. Outside the bloom period the grove remains visually interesting for its evergreen character, dramatic trunk forms, and the cool, shaded microclimate it creates. The surrounding hardwood forest transitions to spruce-fir at higher elevations on the connecting trails to Little Monadnock Mountain. Connecting trails allow extension of the visit to include wild blueberry barrens and views toward Mount Monadnock.
